Yateley and District Gardening Society

Our 2016 Programme of talks, events, sales, visits and quizes covers a wide variety of gardening activities, including talks from some well-known experts - there will have something of interest to all gardeners! We welcome new members and non-members to all of our meetings, flower shows, social events and outings. Meetings and social evenings are held at Hedgecroft, Bracken Lane (near Waitrose), usually on the 2nd Monday of the month and start at 7.30pm (unless otherwise stated). Non–members are very welcome to join the meeting for a small entrance fee of £2.00. Teas and coffee’s are available in the evening. Italy from Seed to Plate.

Italy from Seed to Plate.

Speaker: Paolo Arrigo.

Location: St Peter's Church, Yateley.

Our guest speaker is Paolo Arrigo, who comes from, Franchi Seeds, one of the oldest family run seed companies in the world. His talk will cover vegetables from Roman Times to the present day, and follows the journey of the traditional vegetables from Italy to the U.K. Look out for a few surprises, and Paolo will have some seeds for sale.

49th Annual General Meeting.

YDGS 49th Annual General Meeting.

Location: Hedgecroft, Bracken Lane.

The 49th YDGS Annual General Meeting, where the committee will submit their report of the activities of the society for the past year, along with the financial accounts. This also gives members the chance to ask the committee any concerns they may have, and to elect the 2016 committee.

The AGM will be followed by YDGS Quiz Time!! with a potpourri of questions to tease the brain cells.

Please note 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start for the AGM.

Garden Visit.

The Art of Bee Keeping.

Speaker: Geoff Galliver.

Our speaker Geoff Galliver will explain what is involved in keeping bees, which is so vital for the production of fruit and vegetables in our gardens.

There will be honey for sale.

Annual Yateley May Fayre

Location: Yateley Village Green.

The Society will once again have a stall at the Annual Yateley May Fayre selling plants and promoting Society membership.

Come along and meet the members, and buy some home grown plants, vegetables, and any gardening questions, one of the members will gladly chat to you.

Plant Heritage is the UK’s cultivated plant conservation charity which accredits the National Plant Collections® as part of its work. Sarah Quarterman, one of our members, will tell us how the work began and the people behind the plants.

Our guest speaker Thomas Stone will introduce us to some of the stunning roses at Montisfont Abbey, part of the National Heritage Collection of Roses.

Dig for Victory.

Speaker: Russell Bowes.

Our guest speaker, Russell Bowes,

will take us back in time when England’s gardeners swapped clematis and roses for radishes and cabbages in their effort to ensure the nation was fed during WW2. He will talk about the role of the Land Girls and allotments.

Please note that this will be a 7:30pm for 8:00pm start.

Visit to Loseley Park Gardens.

A Visit to the Gardens at Loseley Park.

Location: Loseley Park, nr Guildford.

There will be a visit by the society to Loseley Park which will include a garden tour lasting one hour, a chance to look at the gardens on our own and tea/coffee in the Tithe Bar with cake afterwards. The visit will commence at 1.30pm.

The charge for this will be £11.50 per person.

Bearing in mind the time we start it would be a good idea to have lunch beforehand or take a picnic.

Please let us know if you need transport so car sharing can be arranged.

YDGS Annual Autumn Flower and Produce Show.

Location: St Peter's Church, Yateley.

The YDGS Annual Flower & Produce Show in St Peter's Church, Yateley. Classes for flowers, fruit, vegetables, pot plants, cakes, preserves, handicrafts, and a children’s section.

The Show will last from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Cakes and refreshments will be available for purchase as usual!
