The History Behind West Green House

West Green House dates back to the 18th century and has witnessed many chapters of English history. The house itself is a fine example of Georgian architecture, standing proudly amidst the lush gardens. The story shared during the visit revealed how the house was damaged in1990 when the IRA planted a bomb on the property. This event adds a layer of resilience and intrigue to the site, reminding members of the turbulent times the house has endured.

The talk also highlighted the evolution of the gardens, which have been carefully designed and cultivated over decades. The owners’ dedication to preserving the natural beauty while introducing creative planting schemes makes the gardens a living work of art. Members learnt about the various garden styles present, from formal layouts to wildflower meadows, each reflecting different periods and tastes.

Touring the Gardens

After the historical introduction, the group embarked on a tour of the gardens. The paths wind through a variety of themed areas, each offering a distinct atmosphere and plant collection. Some highlights include:

  • The Rose Garden: Filled with fragrant blooms in shades of pink, red, and white, this area invites visitors to pause and enjoy the scent and colours.

  • The Water Garden: Featuring ponds and streams, this section provides a peaceful retreat with reflections of surrounding trees and flowers.

  • The Woodland Walk: A shaded path lined with native trees and wild plants, perfect for spotting birds and small wildlife.

The garden design balances formal and informal elements, encouraging exploration and discovery. Benches placed strategically allow members to rest and take in the views. The changing seasons bring new colours and textures, making each visit unique.
